You may not need it know but perhaps in the near future you will be dealing with mutual funds. So what are these mutual funds? The operative word here is mutual, and from there you can best understand what mutual funds are. What they refer to as the mutual fund is actually a collective investments pooled and taken from the money of many investors and these collected money is then placed in stocks, bonds and other securities and instruments. The fund is professionally managed in a sense that there will be a fund manager that has the capability to trade the money on a regular basis.
Mutual funds are popular in the market right now and worldwide the mutual funds ring up to $26 trillion. The mutual fund’s portfolio is often structured and maintained in order to match the investment objectives. For many mutual funds have a number of advantages over the traditional individual stocks. One advantage is in the form of transaction costs. In the mutual funds set up, the transaction costs that are incurred are usually divided among the mutual fund share holders and this then allows for that cost-effective diversification. If that’s an individual stock, then you have no other option but to carry all the costs of transactions. In the mutual funds you get the services of the professional fund managers. These managers will then apply his expertise and they will take time to manage and research other investment options. But mutual funds aren’t fool proof. Mutual funds whether they are actively managed or passively indexed, these funds are not immune to risks and market movements. Just like any other investments out there, there are also risks that are associated with these funds. So if the fund invests on the stock market and nothing else, then the investments will be prone to the problems linked to the market.
